“Death is not an event in life: we do not live to experience death. If we take eternity to mean not infinite temporal duration but timelessness, then eternal life belongs to those who live in the present. Our life has no end in the way in which our visual field has no limits.” — ― Ludwig Wittgenstein, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (via dhammanovice)

I’m just playing devil’s advocate here and NOT diminishing the pain that some people have suffered lately; especially when it comes to the loss of life.
As I read about the latest gay-bashing attack, I wondered what really is the motivation behind these attacks. Even here in blue-collar, red-neck Philly things aren’t that bad. However, due to a less than stellar economy everywhere, and given the cost of even farting in Manhattan these days, is it gay bashing that’s happening, or is it simply an increase in crime? Crime is up in every city. So are they attacked BECAUSE they are gay, or just happened to be gay and got attacked? Yes, I’ve read the stories and the victim’s comments, but I still wonder.
I thought of this because of an incident I was involved with in 1998. It was the year before I moved to Philadelphia and I was dating a guy in the city. We had a nice night and were walking back to his car holding hands. Two kids on bikes approached us asking for our money, etc. When I refused to give up the rings I was wearing, he pistol-whipped me and knocked me out.
We filed a report about being mugged. The police had said they were fairly certain who the kids were because this had been an ongoing issue in the area.
Although we never filed a gay bashing report or even commented to each other that it might have been gay bashing, I did say that had I wanted to rob someone, who better than two guys holding hands. We just looked like an easy target.
So just a reminder; n
