It has only been about three weeks since I started my new job. I am now a sales rep for a small French eyewear company. My territory is HUGE. I cover from Maine to Indiana to Virginia.
That is how it works with independent eyewear lines. In order for us to make a living, we have to cover a large area. Our products are not sold by any corporate chains. Therefore, we have to work harder than the guy selling a brand name.
The flip side is, I know the frames I sell to opticians are being designed and manufactured by the designer him or herself. There is no corporate giant pumping out mediocre products like all those designer labels…and I do mean ALL.
I met the owner/designer Jean-Francois Rey last weekend at a sales meeting. An incredibly gracious and humble man. It was a thrill and an honor. I even got a look at his art book for future designs. I would still love to meet Fabienne Coudray-Miesel. She is the designer of the other line I carry Volte Face. Knowing these people are actually sitting there thinking about, designing and then producing those designs is inspiring to say the least.
This is my first time in the wholesale side of the business. As such, I am still trying to sort out when and where to see current and potential accounts. I feel a bit scattered in my planning. I suppose I will finally find that groove and just go with. Hopefully it is soon. The beauty is that in about a half a month, I managed to pull 18k in sales for us. A nice accomplishment so far.
The other plus to working for a small company is that at the meeting we were told that once we have a feel for our market, we may certainly make suggestions in regard to design elements. In other words, what works for an American market versus a European market. For the time being, everything is designed for a European aesthetic.
Excited and anxious.
